As fires tear through Australian communities, destroying lives, homes and animals, many are wondering what they can do to help victims and support firefighters.

There are many organisations, charities and people raising funds, and items, to donate to victims. Australians have already donated millions of dollars. Here’s how you can help.

Charities such as IDIDIT and The Red Cross are calling for cash donations, The Red Cross reports it has raised more than $8 million since New Year’s Eve as of today.

“We appreciate that everybody wants to help, but donating money is a more direct way to provide cash grants to people who have lost their homes,” a spokesman said.

“When people have cash in their own pockets, they can spend it in their own communities.”

IDIDIT Foundation, an international not-for-profit that connects people with charities, is raising money on behalf of a number of organisations.

A state of disaster has been declared for six local government areas and three alpine resorts in Victoria, and a state of emergency has been declared in NSW.

Homes have been destroyed, thousands of people are stranded or in limbo and at least nine people have died.
